I read “The First 90 Days: Proven Strategies for Getting Up to Speed Faster and Smarter” for the first time in 2016. Since then, its messages, tips, and strategies have stayed with me, proving invaluable as I navigated through different companies and made contributions over the years. I still have the handwritten notes from the 2016 reading session :)
My lasting takeaways from reading the book are
- secure early wins
- align with the boss’s expectation
- create collations — dotted line relationships matter
- identify key stakeholders
- create a lateral / peer checklist
- listen to everyone’s pain points and fix them
- get to know your boss’s directs (peers) and one or two levels up
- be clear on what kind of change you are there to bring. outline a clear strategy and communicate it well
- have a written 90-day plan (split it into three parts) and share it with your boss
- build a relationship bank (who, what, when)
- build your advisor network
